Polycarp Igathe sells alcohol (again)
June 11, 2006
I recently went of to the MSK
offices to find out how to join up
and be an official card carrying member of the association. The
lady at their Fedha Towers office was really nice and she gave
me all the required forms and even a copy of the May issue of
Sokoni. The magazine has an interesting piece was on magazines
in the East African market. As much as I am quite interested in
magazines, I couldn't help but feel that the whole purpose of
the piece which was quite large was mainly to pitch their new
Eve Girl Magazine.
What however raised my antennae was a piece on one Polycarp Igathe.
My first contact with the fellow was when I was in college. He
had asked a bunch of AIESECers to turn up to be in some Kenya
Airways ad. So several dudes and dudettes (including yours
truly) from several campuses turned up at the University of Nairobi
where we were shuttled of to the JKIA to act in a KQ ad. This
was my first contact with the advertising industry. Our role in
the ad was to be in a crowd scene. When the dude in charge asked
us to wave enthusiastically, I waved my hand so hard that you
would think that I was being offered a princely sum. And when
they gave me my 500/= for my time I was rather pleased for that
was not a bad figure to give a student in the 90's.
In the intermittent years, Polycarp went on to become one of
the hottest young executives in Kenya's corporate scene until
the East African Breweries
brought him on board to sell that evil juice (alcohol!) that they
sell that we all love so much. Unfortunately, his alcohol selling
career was cut short by number 5776 (long story) and he left for
Haco.
The man had recently disappeared from the radar until I read
May's issue of Sokoni. I guess that selling alcohol can be as
addictive as drinking it as the man is now General Manager of
Wines of the world
a firm that sells wine from all over the place. We expect the
dude to bring the same enthusiasm that he brought to making us
drinking huge amounts of Pilsner Ice. And like the bright executive
that he is, he has already started by sponsoring the upcoming
AIESEC dinner. Get them while
they are still young eh?
