| :: The Kenya Music week
10 December 2006
The plan was to watch Man Yoo
being crushed by Man City in the Manchester derby. So an hour
before the match, me and Ed, our fave Kwani
Intern, passed by Sarit centre to check out the Kenya
music week exhibition. I didn’t know what to expect
there but I figured that I might as well see what was on offer
as I waited for the match. At the information desk they handed
me a floor plan and shock on me. There were eighty bloody stands
at this event! How the hell did this one pass me by? Yaani every
one in the Kenyan music industry was featured in this event. Holy
mother of God. The crowd was huge in there.
I instituted the tried and tested method of visiting exhibitions.
This involves going around the whole exhibition barely pausing
just to see what each stand had on offer. This way one saw a snapshot
of the whole of Sarit. Then one could easily pick and choose the
people that one was really interested in. I did a quick run around
the exhibition, then started looking through stands of some interest.
There was the Eve Girl /Oakland Media stand ably manned or rather
womanned by Wayua Muli the shapely editor of
Eve Girl. As I was looking at this month’s edition of the
magazine, my pal Bosire showed up and said wsup.
There was also the Citizen Royal media. They were promoting x-treem
music show which is like "The Beat" on NTV
or H2O on KTN. This one is prepared by the Blackstar group. And
there was Mwafrika.com the gospel portal that had so many pals.
And what I consider one of the best Kenyan websites Campusvybe.com.
I was fortunate to meet Joshua Mwaniki who is
the face of campusvybe.com. This man is a legend on the campusvybe.com
forums and we had a nice chat as I looked at all the campus booty
in his stand (verry nice).
There was the Balozi productions stand. It was manned by Mwaniki
Mageria who always does a stand up job mcing all those
Kwani open mics. I saw a beautiful thing on "the stomp"
earlier today. It was some animated lions singing a gospel song
that was Kayamba Africa sung. It was so nice. Balozi productions
was credited with the work. Note to self: Ask Mwaniki if his Balozi
is the same Balozi doing such great animation.
And there was Kijiji Records. These guys did
this wonderful CD for aerobics and was targeted at gyms. This
CD ruled. The tracks were very off the hizzi my nizzi! They used
very aerobics type tracks but the singing comprised those songs
we used to use to cheer our teams in sports in high school like
"mama milka! milka bonyo!" and "eloya, woiwoi eloya!"
Don’t ask me for the CD! Email Kijiji at kijijirecords@gmail.com
and leave me be.
The gospel influence was really there to be seen. Angela
Chibalonza the Congolese singer was there (congratulations
on your new baby girl Madame). As was award winning Wangeci
Mbogo. And DNG (assuming he is still
gospel).
But you know where I headed and spent quite some time. One stand
was the one for Mahogany models. This stand was
quite an attractive one with all the hot model babes. I off course
asked what it took to be a model and they took a snap of me and
asked me to come back in an hour with a review from the people
in the know. I wasn't called back. I guess I have no career in
the modeling business then...
Also passed by a stand which had so many models and I immediately
stopped to enjoy the view. I was given a card by a person in the
stand and it stated that the hot babes were part of the Kinky
models. Yup. These are the same models that were there during
the launch of the MSK gala
as well as the gala itself. Watch this space then… The stand
was actually booked by a dude called stitch who has some serious
leather and denim threads that y’all need to check out.
I didn’t stay too long after this. I had to head and see
if Man Yoo could be beaten. They weren’t. Sad.
