| :: December Pub Crawl
Alright we all know what use December is especially after December
11. Drinking. I will not get any arguments from any one on this.
Here are some pubs patronised over the holiday
period.
Mwendas, Utalii House, CBD
I had gone to this pub initially and ordered my Tusker when I
noted that no one was drinking from a brown bottle. I asked this
former colleague of mine who was there and I was shocked to learn
that the place is actually a cocktail lounge. I went there over
the New Years Eve and had a ball. Cocktails with imaginative names
like Dark F**k, Sex appeal and the old favourites Pina Coladas
and bloody mary. Cocktails at kshs280 typically and I highly recommend
Mudslide (yum yum). Shooters typically at Kshs150 and here I recommend
hezbollah (recipe includes fire!)
Habesha II (Formerly chic joint), Utalii House, CBD
They keep changing this joints name. Reminds me of that building
with an identity complex on Koinange Street and is now called
Cellucom. In earlier lives it has been a Daewoo building, A Samsung
one and more. Anyway back to Habesha II. There is Habesha in Hurlingham
area. I haven’t been there. The main difference between
Habesha II and the Chic Joint as it was then called is that the
pictures on the wall are more Ethiopian oriented. And the menu
that has Ethiopian food and not beef stew and those old Kenyan
favourites. And the Ethiopian ladies that look like you can pay
for pare pare. Otherwise its just chic joint.
Visa Place, Upper Hill Area
Went to say goodbye to Mel as she was foing her goodbye event
here. Its a really great pub. Nice cold tuskers. Large cavernous
set up meaning that you can hide from a marauding wife in case
you are hepaing. you need a moti. Or at least a Cabbie John. The
area is upper hill as in Up a Hill so none of that pedestrian
route 11 bollocks. Tuskers were Kshs100
Enzogu Bar,
Went to this pub after Mels do at Visa Place. The love lingala
at the upstairs place which I cannot stand. There is a smaller
pub like area at the bottom floor with a TV with DSTV and soft
rock blaring. Much better. Tusker Kshs100
K2, Baricho Road
Yes ladies and gentlemen. The pub with the longest bar in Africa
(assuming that wasn't a hoax) is back. Same dance floor. Same
nice cold Tuskers (at Kshs100). Same pedestrian crowd returning.
Not bad. Welcome back K2. Is Kenya night back too?
Fiesta, Chester House, CBD
More classy. Lounge areas where you and your beloved can be hidden
from prying eyes. Nice white leather seats. And wooden ones too.
A great mixed platter. Tuskers at Kshs120. A great place to chill
away from the maddening crowd.
Choices, Baricho Road
Classic. No one dare speak badly about this joint. I spent sometime
at this joint and well... They don't seem to have changed much
which is a good thing. Meet the faces unseen in years by visiting
this pub. Memories of "the Incident" slowly seeping
away from me.
Club Soundd, Kaunda Street, CBD
It seems to be the place for pals who are in there mid twenties
to hook up. Its smack bang in the middle of Nairobi’s central
business district on the second floor of Hamilton house. It has
a small dance floor so for those wishing to shake their booty,
its not such a bad option. With the high number of campus students
witnessed, I have a feeling that in about 10 years time, many
will be talking about the good old days of Club Soundd (like some
of us still yammer on about the Irish Pub and F3 and Zig Zag and
Dreams)
Hooters, Kaunda Street, CBD
This pub continues being the most unfriendly to women patrons.
You won’t see mamas at Hootie and you won’t hear me
complaining truth be told. This pub is really of the sports pub
variety. Everyone seems to know everyone else at least by appearance.
And when the game is on there is a studious silence. I will be
here when we crush Man U
on the 21st (again).
