| :: Introducing a new look for Pilsner
May 2008
I'm sure that you have seen the adverts in the media with our
friends at EABL. They are showing the new labels their products
are having. I was lucky to be a guest at one of the launches for
these new labels Pilsner. I was given a holler by our good pal
Bosaya about this happening event where they
were launching the new look Pilsner. He gave me directions to
come by Komatsu by Nyayo Stadium and I headed there post haste
instead of getting into Jogoo Road traffic and be annoyed for
two hours.
Off course I had a problem getting to Komatsu. Its the place
just before the first Nyayo Stadium roundabout on Uhuru Highway.
Here they sell large earth moving trucks and the like. So I had
to ask directions several times after my bro had dropped me off
huko at Ford behind Nakumatt. I eventually made it to the venue.
It was an equal opportunity destroyer of shoes as even if you
had driven in you had to wade through a muddy stretch. As I was
getting closer to the entrance I saw a young lass dressed in AIESEC
T-shirt wading her way out of the place. I thought I might give
her some encouragement and yelled to her, "hey aiesec!"
She looked up and cursed before she headed off into the night.
So much for being a friendly perv looking fellow.
I met by some rather friendly looking bouncers (their T-shirts
had Radar Security on there) manning the entrance so I had to
be rather friendly as I am partial to my teeth staying in my mouth
as long as is possible. Eventually I got in and could check out
what out friends had prepared. This Komatsu place is quite interesting
looking in my view. The place was covered by this huge canvas
tent. And I mean huge. You can probably fit a huge tractor in
there and still leave plenty of space at the top for another one.
The floor was more along the lines of Kokoto which can be pretty
uncomfortable if you came in with heels which I could see quite
a bit off.
The crowd was kibao as they say. I was seeing too many people
in there. Run into Liz Ogumbo and Sharon
O looking glamorous as usual. And as I went further into
the crowd I couldn't help but marvel the power free pints have
to bring people together. There was our good pal Eugene
Obiero. And he was with Sheila Harrison
who I last saw at Tusker project
fame. And there was someone else who should have been in this
picture seeing as this was Sheila we are talking about but I can't
for the life of me remember who that could be. Also ran into Mary
Kingarui who now goes by a different name over at East
Africa Magazines. And Sokoni editorial pal Billy Etale. And
there was also good pal Smitta Smitten (who reminded
me that I will be wearing a wedding
dress pretty soon) and his Sharanova. And Solo
of STV. And Tony Ngare my fellow gooner. And
Philip Ogola who does this excellent magazine
Time Out and is my personal hero.
Away from the people I knew the event itself wasn't too bad.
The Emcee was Buddha Blaze which is a pretty
interesting name seeing as the name he has employed has something
to do with smoking bangi but then who am I to judge with a name
like Web Bandit? There were performances from a band that I missed.
But the avoid show stoppers were Abass kubaff
and Jua Cali. I love these guys and their music
but I am rapidly getting to the point where the next time I hear
live at an event, I am liable poke someone in the eye in anger.
ARE THERE NO OTHER PERFORMERS IN KENYA FOR GOD"S SAKE?!?!?
I will reserve judgements for now and say that their performances
were professional as usual.
Now were all here to check out the new look Pilsner. With such
a large event happening you can imagine that there was a lot changing
with the brand. I asked for a new look pilsner from the barman
and he promptly gave me the drink in those large plastic cups
that fill a whole pint. I decided to have a taste of this drink
before I thought about the packaging. The same smooth Pilsner
was going down my gut that has been doing so before I changed
brands a few years back. Good lager that. I eventually got a hold
of the new bottle and the old one and compared. They had changed
they look somewhat. The sticker (the one which we remove immediately
we get our beer) was now not square but more oval shaped. And
instead of three stars the new bottle had five stars under the
name of the brand. That’s it. Same brown bottle. Same lager.
Just two more stars. I wonder what the lager had to do to get
those two extra stars. Are 5 stars the equivalent of like a black
belt or something? Can someone please enlighten me?
