It was Saturday and every one was headed out of town. Having really enjoyed that Impala Floodlit tourney the week before, my plan was to head to Nakuru for the Great Rift Ten A Side. I headed to yamakima bought my ticket and had to wait a bloody two hours before my Nissan finally took off. Mtu ategwee roho safi. Then we left the city via the central police station (to be frisked by our law enforcement officials) and off to meet the wonderful wizard of Oz Nakuru rugby. Going across country is one of the most pleasurable things one can ever have the fortune of experiencing in Kenya. Heading past the view point where you could see (cliché alert) the expansive and breathtaking gash of land that goes across the African content that they call the Rift Valley and on to Nakuru. As soon as I got to the town I called a few friends like Chiqui and a few more. After a solid meal (there would be some drinking my good friend) I headed to where the rugby had been going down. It was already dark when I checked into the NSC. It is pretty Spartan if you consider that this is the place that has been hosting one of the most famous rugby tourneys in Kenya for the last two decades. Yup. Since 1989 they have been hosting the great rift ten a side at this venue. As it was a bit dark already I really could not talk about the venue with any authority as the place lighting outside was mostly supplied by the many cars around the place. People were blasting music from the few cars left after the games and dancing around energetically and it was good. Checking into the club house I headed straight to the bar. It had been a whole week away from the booze and the cold Tusker was welcomed. There were rugby fans all over the place and people were gathering around two TVs that the club house had on offer. After all Kenya was playing in the final leg of the International Rugby Board (IRB) sevens circuit in Edinburgh. And they looked to be about to screen one of the Kenya matches on the little TVs in there. How fortuitous. I had been right on time to see the last game of the day. I was watching the tiny TV (that was a small TV if ever I saw one why lie) and yes Kenya won the match handily. There was celebration in that club house and everyone was just happy as heck. And I ran into the Quins Quoro some of whom I know pretty well like Twiggy and G.L. And there was also Kalenjin Sister whose birthday we were celebrating on this day. Eventually people left the club house and scattered to the four winds. I opted to meet some pals in Taidy's and there I was to meet a few old pals and make some new ones. Turns out the whole of Nairobi that failed to make it to that rhino charge in Mogotio/Nandi were in here having a drink in Taidy's. Man. it was like a typical evening in Mwenda’s/Rezorous and its usual madness. Eventually some of the people who we were to meet (that included Chiqui and Kalenjin Sister) check in and the viceroy and coke is flowing and it is all good. And guys decide to head at the Summit where sijui what was going down. I take a quick dash and people are set to join me at the place. As soon as I am in the place my phone dies on me and my pals are not coming. Not a worry. As I am strolling out I run into the Quins quoro again and I check back in. It was an inspired move as eventually who was to start performing live on stage? Jua Cali. The King of Genge who, by a friends reckoning, will cross the one million dollar mark very soon (if he already hasn’t). The man gave his usual energetic performance. Does "Waaaaaatttttuuuuuu!!!" sound familiar? Fast forward to the next day and I find my self at the Nakuru rugby grounds exhausted and really having had way to much to drink. I was hanging out at the CFC Stanbic tent and these people were ever so kind to allow me to hang out there. I was to find out that David Kinyua is no longer working for organisation. I hang out until the lady in charge decided that I was making her tent look bad and she asked me to move away ategwee. Eventually I did see my new favourite team Impala beat KCB again just like last week at the Impala Floodlit finals. Yaani KCB ni macustomer wetu hivyo? And the way that we beat them was just nice. Coming from behind and whopping a guy is so sweet I tell ya. After this game I moved to the club house to watch Kenya’s sevens team Shujaa do their thing in Wales against world champions Wales live from Edinburgh. It was not pretty. The Welsh had a very physical game that prevented us from our usual fast paced game which we win games with handily. The only fun part was sitting with Kenyan fans as we sang songs like the guys on TV could hear us all the way to Scotland. And they were really funny calling the TV a blackberry (sorry Nakuru guys I really found this hilarious). That TV was a bit interesting with some of the strongest fortification that could protect such a miniscule TV. Clearly a TV is a very hot commodity in Nakuru like the Toyota is in this town. And husbands. Having lost all I could do was take a bus home and sob (ha ha ha ati me sobbing that’s a good one). I was in Naks for less than 24hours but I had quite some more. Next stop Safari Sevens. And then Driftwoods whenever those MSC forko jembes (that’s for moving the event randomly) have decided it will happen. |
