Nyachae website taken over by pornographers

There were heady days those final days of 2002. Everyone spoke of the election and how the hope was for a better Kenya . And the different campaigns came up with different websites to sell their campaign to the web savvy amongst us. It was really quite sight to see as the various websites being unveiled at the various campaign events.

Simeon Nyachae had a vision and ran for President of Kenya in 2002. As a part of his media campaign, he launched nyachae.org to show how Kenya would look under his administration. His party of choice was Ford People which had to have the weirdest rallying cry.

Speaker: Ford People!
Crowd: Watu!
Speaker: Watu!
Crowd: Wengi!
Speaker: Wengi!
Crowd: Sana !

Sadly, the old man lost his bid for the presidency. And as he was not likely to run again, I guess he decided to lapse on his payment for his domain name. Seems cool enough no? Wrong! Big mistake mister minister. Since he did not pay for the domain, it has since been taken up by an enterprising group of pornographers. I discovered this a few days ago when I had stumbled onto kisii.com on one of those Kenyan chat rooms. Suddenly, I had the urge to check out Simeon Nyachae's website and what was to pop up when I went there but "Welcome to a new era in XXX entertainment! Uncensored adult videos in HIGH DEF." To say that I was a bit taken aback really has to be the understatement of the year. I looked through the website hoping to see at least a picture of the old man. No such luck.

The fair on offer at the website was pretty common for a porno site. I had to wonder how this happened when it hit me. Traffic. When you advertise a website, people do visit and your site can get amazing amounts of traffic. The porno guys usually know the sites that have decent traffic and as soon as you refuse to pay for the domain name, they happily harvest your hard work and start selling their wares to your audience.

So how does one avoid being done a Nyachae.org? For one always keep up payment on your domain name. At less that 1,000/= a year, it's a small price to pay. Alternatively, if you know that you don't intend to pay in future years, try and register a .co.ke domain. A person registering such a domain has to be in Kenya and you can always seek and put the beat down on them if they try pulling such a move.

So if you web hosting guy tells you your domain name is due for paying... listen!
