Copa Coca Cola Coastal and Nairobi regions proceed to the provincial level

A total of 21 teams from the Coastal Region and 20 teams from Nairobi have been selected from the COPA Coca-Cola tournament, played over the weekend in both regions and teams proceed to the provincial level in Mombasa and Nairobi respectively from 9th -11April.

The tournament in Coastal region was played in 5 major towns including Mombasa, Malindi, Voi, Kwale and Hola 

In Mombasa, boys category, Mombasa United, Changamwe Secondary, Kongowea Secondary and Gulshai, qualified for the provincials while Shining ladies will represent the town during the provincials.  

In Malindi, Gede, Alaskan, Upweoni and Maweni football clubs from the boys’ teams will represent the town in the provincial level. Furaha Ladies trounced their opponents to proceed to the Provincials.  

Voi town will be represented by Mwongea and Beach warriors Football clubs.  Mwafisawa Secondary School from the town will be joining the other 4 girls’ teams at the Provincials.  

Waa Boys Secondary, Kwale Boys Secondary and Mbenyenye Stars qualified from the games played in Kwale, and Waa Girls Seconday will be accompanying them to the provincials.  

In Hola, Mission FC, Hola Primary and Lazar Primary qualified from the boys teams. The girls will be represented by RiverStars FC. 

In the games played in Nairobi the following teams proceeded to the provincial level.

In Kamkunji, Makadara and Starehe areas, Ofafa Jericho Secondary School, Fisa Academy, Blue Stars FC, Eaisleigh Stars Asek FC and Pellico FC will represent their areas in the provincial level. The girls’ teams to accompany them are Pioneer Secondary school and Dhacks FC. 

In western area; boys’ category, Kibera combined, Glyss Langata, Dago Totos, Gully Creepers, Ujuzi Academy and Mwimuto Wailers qualified to the provincials. The girls’ teams are Kibera Girls Soccer team and Olympic high school. 

In Stima, Korogocho and Annointed FC will represent the boys and in Utalii, Maili Saba and indomitable lions FC will proceed to the provincial level. 

Ms Pamela Mutua, the Senior Franchise Brand Manager – Kenya said that the organizers were impressed with Coastal and Nairobi events. “Teams from the two regions have displayed impressive level of football skills, and the girls’ teams displayed prowess in their matches which is encouraging. 

She added, “Our talent scouts were in the region and have been able to identify some very good talent from the area, who will be taking on each other in the provincial stage of the tournament.” 
 

The scope of this year’s COPA Coca-Cola has increased, with 1,324 teams of under-17 youth expected to take part in the five-month tournament. Last year, 256 teams participated.  
 
Of the total number of teams registered, 200 are expected to comprise an all-girls side. There is also a significant increase in the number of district teams that will be participating in the popular tournament which targets budding grassroots soccer talent in communities and schools countrywide.
