Copa Coca Cola attracts 86 boys teams, 28 girl teams in Eastern.

The 2010 COPA Coca-Cola Eastern Kenya region tournament kicked off today. The tournament attracted 86 boys teams and 28 girls teams, a mix of Youth community teams, secondary schools and primary schools. 

Eastern Region has 8 stations which are, Meru, Embu, Machakos, Makueni, Chuka, Mwingi, Kitui,and Isiolo.

In Meru 18 boys teams and 7 girls’ teams were registered. The boys were divided into two pools, pool A, Kibirichia boys secondary 5 Vs Abaguthuci 2, Meru School knocked out Ntakira through penalties 10-9, OntuliliSecondary school was not knocked out by Kisima Secondary  0-1 and Tigania West youth club knocked out Kithuene primary school 1-0. In pool B, Kithurune Yourh Club knocked out PCEA Secondary school, 4-0, Township youth Club edged out Katheri secondary school 5-2 and Kimachia Secondary school was knocked out by Maili tatu 0-2.  In the girls teams, Yururu girls vs Kibiroicha girls 2-1, Gikumene girls vs Ntunene 0-1, United stars Vs Kiragara 1-0. 

Mwingi registered 5 boys’ teams and 1 girl’s team. Kyanika girls got a walk over and qualified to the provincial level for lack of other girls teams in the town. In the boys teams, Migwayo vs Mwingi west Junior 0-1. 

Isiolo registered 13 boys teams and Moi Girls Marsabit got a walk over to the provincial for being the only girls team in the town.In the boys team, West stars Vs Quba 0-2.  

Chuka registered 12 boys teams and 3 girls teams, in the boys teams Red Scorpion Vs Githeru 0-1, Chuka biys vs Kiamuriuki Rangers, 0-2, in the girls teams Mugona High Vs Gituntu 2-1. 

In Machakos 16 boys teams were registered and 5 girls teams. In the boys teams Kaani primary Vs Muslim Primary 4-6, Youngn Rovers Vs KMC 5-3 

In Embu 14 boys teams registered and 5 girls teams. In the boys teams, Kanguru boys Vs Kigonge 1-0, BMW boys Vs Kirimari 0-1, Runyenje Youth Vs Kamiu Sec 1-0, Nguviou Vs Kamama 2-4. In the girls team, BMW girls Vs Kamiu 2-1, Kangaru girls vs Kaniaru 2-1. 

Makueni registred 10 boys teams and 5 girls teams. In the boys category, Kambi Vs Kathonzweni 2-0, Muwani boys vs Mbooni West 0-1,Mbooni boys vs Mbooni West 5-4. In the girls category Malivani Sec Vs Makueni sec 0-1, Kambi Mawe Vs Mavindu 2-3. 

Kitui had 8 boys teams and 2 girls teams. Boys category, Wanzua Vs Twelve Stars 0-3, Nzagathi Vs Madonini, 3-1, in the girls game, Matithini Vs Katungi 0-1. 

Ms Pamela Mutua, the Senior Franchise Brand Manager – Kenya said that” from the last two regional tournaments we have seen high level of football and the girls teams particularly have displayed prowess in their matches and this is encouraging. We have also seen more community based teams participating in the tournament and we look forward to an even bigger turn out in Eastern Province.  

She added, “In keeping with the objective of talent searching, there will be talent scouts in all the six towns that the games will be played in, and we look forward to seeing the talent in Eastern Region. The tournament is also keeping with our goal of promoting active healthy lifestyles among the youth.” 

The scope of this year’s COPA Coca-Cola has increased, with 1,324 teams of under-17 youth expected to take part in the five-month tournament. Last year, 256 teams participated.
