A total of 25 teams from the COPA Coca-Cola tournament, played over the weekend in Central region, have been selected for the provincials challenge to take place from 2nd -4th April in Nyeri town. The 25 teams- 17 boys’ teams and girls’ teams emerged winners from a pool of 131 teams that battled it out during the Districts’ stage of the tournament.

The tournament in Central region was played in 8 major towns including Thika, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Maragua, Muranga, Nyahururu, Nanyuki and Kiambu.

Githurai, Samura, and Gatunyu teams qualified from the games played in Thika, while Thika Queens will be accompanying them to the provincials.

In Nyeri, Spread Youth, Nyeri High and Daal u quran qualified from the boys teams. Gatuge Girls secondary team trounced their opponents to proceed to the Provincials.

Kinangop Totos and Gitingi boys teams will represent Nyahururu town and the girls will be represented by Shamata girls Secondary School.

In Nanyuki, Inoro sec and Nanyuki High qualified from the boys teams. The girls will be represented by Ngenia Sec School.

And in Kiambu, the following teams emerged winners: Karuri high, Limuru Olympic youth club and Kirenga Girls Secondary School.

Ms Pamela Mutua said that the organizers were impressed with the Central Kenya event. “Central Kenya teams have displayed impressive level of football skills. Our talent scouts were in the region and have been able to identify some very good talent from the area, who will be taking on each other in the provincial stage of the tournament.”

The scope of this year’s COPA Coca-Cola has increased, with 1,324 teams of under-17 youth expected to take part in the five-month tournament. Last year, 256 teams participated.

Of the total number of teams registered, 200 are expected to comprise an all-girls side. There is also a significant increase in the number of district teams that will be participating in the popular tournament which targets budding grassroots soccer talent in communities and schools countrywide.

COPA Coca-Cola differs from other tournaments in the country because it ensures that the best talent – also known as ‘the Best of the Best’ – continue to progress throughout the games despite elimination of teams in the early rounds of the competition.

Registered teams will play each other from district to provincial levels and in each round, talent scouts select impressive budding talent which will progress to the national finals to be held in May.

The girls’ teams, which will participate up to the national level, are set to add more excitement to the tournament this year.  Last year, only boys participated as the Company implemented its remodeled tournament format.

For the second year in a row, Coca-Cola has partnered with The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) to administer the tournament countrywide.  This year, KPL will manage all technical aspects of the tournament including talent scouting in districts, provision of referees to handling of the nationals which will be played in Nairobi in May.

The upscale of the tournament from 256 to 1,324 teams makes COPA Coca-Cola the biggest football tournament outside of the schools system.   Awards will be given to the winning boys’ and girls’ teams for Best Player of the Tournament, The Leading top scorer, Best Goalkeeper and The Most disciplined Team.

The Dream Team – which comprises 16 of the best players from the national tournament – will travel to South Africa for a soccer camp to undergo world-class training and coaching and have a chance to play in the Africa COPA Coca-Cola tournament.
