Kenya shines in opening match of the Copa coca-cola Inter-Africa tournament
Sunday, 07 June 2009 16:52
Kenya got off to a good start at the COPA Coca-Cola Inter-Africa Tournament in South Africa today, when they won their opening match against Namibia 3-0.

The first goal was scored by defender, Wilson Kimani in the 26th minute. Kenya then saw its second goal come through in the second half when midfielder Talib Aidh scored in the 48th minute. Seven minutes later, striker, Daniel Mwaura, took another swipe at the Namibian team scoring another goal.

The action moved to the field of play today at the High Performance Training Center in the University of Pretoria, after all the 12 African Dream Teams spent a week participating in life skills tests and exercises. The teams have been drawn into two pools and will compete in a round robin tournament for the first three days after which the top 2 teams go into the semifinals on 10th June.

Speaking after the match, Kenya team coach, Mr. Yusuf Chipo, said that he was pleased with the performance of the team in the first game. “I’m happy with the way the boys performed this morning. They put on a good show and I hope they will even do better in their next game against Ethiopia this afternoon”.

In other matches played in the morning, Uganda lost to Zimbabwe 3-1 while Malawi won their match against the all Invitational team comprising of players from Congo, Mozambique, Rwanda and South Africa 3-0 and Nigeria and Zambia drew 0-0. Tanzania beat Ethiopia 5-0 while South Africa won their match against Botswana 2-1.

The final match, on Friday 12th June, will be played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium which will also host the opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup two days later.

This is the first time COPA Coca-Cola tournament has had an Africa competition and all participating countries have unanimously agreed that it is undoubtedly the most exciting and influential development tournament on the African continent.

For Coca-Cola this is an important element in the company’s focus on football. “we are impressed by the level of play that’s being diplayed by the team today, and we have no doubt that they will be the next stars of our country,” said Ms. Pamela Mutua, Senior Brand Manager for Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola is involved in football at the highest level including the FIFA flagship tournaments, the FIFA Confederations Cup and FIFA World Cup™, as well as FIFA World Cup™ Trophy Tour.

To date, Coca-Cola has invested Kshs. 40 million in Copa Coca-Cola.  This includes donation of footballs, kits to the team, prize money and preparations for the Africa Copa Coca-Cola championships.

At the end of the Africa Copa Coca-Cola finals, all teams will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch the opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup kicking off on the 14th June 2009 at the Coca-Cola Park in South Africa.
