5 cool Kenyan artists on youtube

The one thing this blog has over many that have joined over the last few years is longevity. One of the posts I did in 2005 October was The Kapuka Connection. The thing is that at time there was a new wave of Kenyan urban music and I speculated that the music business is ripe for investment that I didn't have. Well what can say? Not only was I right but the artists did their homework and came back with some vim.

If there is one thing that you know about Kenyan artists is to do is innovate where some idiot has already blazed the trail. You know that as soon as you open a business then you will have a whole bunch of competitors doing the exact same thing at the exact same place you are at. The thing with music I believe that this is a great thing as that gives listeners options and the artists are forced to work hard to get attention.

One of the innovations that has to be youtube. The power of Youtube was seen a while ago when the Makmende phenomenon came upon us giving us an internet frenzy with much love from Zain Verjee, a feature on CNN and a listing as a "Foreign Meme" on Cracked.com. Good times.

The artists took note and today the first stop for many of them who will sometimes to get played on the music shows have a platform they can take advantage of. The results have slowly started trickling in as Kenyans and Kenyan based artists started racking up the numbers. As I speak here are SOME of songs by these artists that have already crossed the 100,000 page views which means that they are being watched over and over.

- Haturudi Nyuma - Kidum feat Juliana Kanyomozi – 624,500
- Sinzia – Nameless – 577,826
- Missing My Baby - Amani - 500,265
- Kigeugeu (Official Video)
– Jaguar - 396,756 views
- Sweet love - Wahu 371,017
- Kwaheri - Jua Cali feat. Sanaipei Tande - 204,403
- Get down - Madtraxx - 204,042
- Uliniumba nikuabudu - Angela Chibalonza – 241,751
- Yule Pale by Redsan - 155,617
- Najua - Eunice Njeri - 154,352
-
Umeniweza - Eunice njeri - 146,197
- Haiya by Harry Kimani - 127,190
- Muhadhara - Jimmie Gait -105,479 views
- Coming Home by Sauti Sol - 102,710
- Kare (Official video) - P-Unit ft Mimmo – 100,190

You will notice that these are some of the biggest names in the Kenyan music business and you better believe more guys will be taking advantage of this space. What I love about this medium is that while the bigger names get the huge figures, even the smaller more nice bands get their space. Here are five songs by who are not megastars on the Kenyan “pop charts” but whose songs I really enjoy. First is the name of the song followed by the name of the artists.

Uwezo - The Adawnage Band

Kenchic – The villages band

Breathe - Zidi the Band

Muciari – Mimmo

Ugali Sosa – Man Ingwe

P.S. Borussia Dortmund 1- 1 Arsenal. The Arsenal slowly rebuilds.

P.P.S Ulinzi 2 – 0 Thika United. I guess you cant have it all I suppose. Bloody soldiers.
