The Sony peeps were good enough telling us that they were the first guys who put music and cameras in phones. Wow. The company executives stated how they were interested in being number one in android already hosting the position in 12 countries, number two on more and working toward market leadership. As I sat in that swanky hotel enjoying excellent coffee and buns something hit me. OK. So they want to be number one in android. I have been hearing so many people talking about their apps in android and everyone is crazy about this app thing. There is a MobiTracker Android App that Allows users to track stolen or lost Mobile Phones. Even the NSE has gone Android. But just what is it? Lets start wit what the smartphone. Mobile phones have been getting smarter and smarter now having cameras, music players, compasses and the like. As they get smarter they are slowly becoming like mini computers that one carries around. As they get smarter they need better and better operating systems for their “mobileness” (a word I just invented thank you very much). An operating system is the platform that the computer on the phone needs to run on. Think of Windows on your PC. Several people have been working for the last few years to come up with a good mobile operating system and one of the most popular of these is Android. It was developed by the Open Handset Alliance led by Google. There are a few other major operating systems out there that include the Apple IOS that runs all the I-phone, I-pad gadgets and Windows Mobile . Windows Mobile has made an unholy alliance with the people from Nokia. Then there is RIM OS (operation system), these are the guys that run Blackberry, which is also in that race to a smaller extent. The best thing about these Mobile OS's is that there are several applications that have been developed by software programmers. These applications or “apps” are designed to help your life run better. Some like snaptu and seesmic help you access your social networks like twitter and Facebook. Others help you to know that your battery has been fully charged. Some are financial tools like the NSE one mentioned above, Bloomberg Mobile and CNNMoney. Others help us find our way like Google Earth and Google Maps There are hundreds of thousands that have been developed out on the web for free or for sale. Are we a bit clearer on what Android is now? If we aren't try reading more on it at the Wikipedia page on the same.
P.S. Have a heart and vote for Winyo if you get a minute here. Dude is up for a few bob and every little bit helps. |
