| The 4th Bar stool open mic and NIC Bank: wagwaaan!!! |

It was the last Wednesday of the month and it was that time of we went to register our presence at Giggles on Banda
Street. As usual we were in for an evening of poetry and merriment wrought about by the 'Bar Stool Open Mic." And this month was quite special as the prizes were being given by our friends from NIC Bank. NIC bank for the uninitiated are the guys whom recently unleashed an entrepreneur account and club blowing my mind in the process. There was to be some disappointment on my part off course. Sally Kahiu who's poetry ground I worship... wait that just sounds wrong... Sally who I worship... nope... Whose ground I worship poetry wise... This will have to do. Anyway Sally Kahiu was absent with apologies. Sitawa she of Discovery Open Mic was also missing in action but this was because she thought the gig was meant to be on the Thursday. Well usually it WAS held on Thursday but with the promulgation holiday they had to push the night one day back to Wednesday. It was good there was a bit of confusion about the date as the crowds today were a bit more manageable than in previous Bar Stool Open mics. Okay I’m getting really fed up of referring to it as Bar Stool Open Mic. Henceforth in this site when I say BSOM you will know that I am referring to this event. Even with the relatively fewer pals there was quite a large bunch of people in here. The J Bonyo foundation @jbonyo, @Mwanikih, @Siteiya who is still in exams but made the time bless her and her Siteiya.com was in full effect. @kauchii was nowhere to be seen and I am still waiting confirmation on my admittance to this exclusive club. The fact that I did not attend a "group of schools" and instead went to a primary school next to the Kenya Bus Station doesn't seem to be working in my favour. However the chairman assures me that very soon my dreams will be realised and I will be an associate member. Apart from the foundation there were also the event founders John Ngugi and Oliver Governor wa Wakasa (he keeps changing his Facebook name I tell you). There was also a bunch of people representing the title sponsors (NIC Bank remember?) from the evening some of whom I ran into that launch several moons ago. Like Terry and of course Phil Wahome and a few others. Also in there were the likes of Mr. Nairobipictures himself Lee. And Vincho our film maker friend who at the Cannes Film Festival last year featured her scary movie "The Film Resurrect". Scary as those people are cutting men’s penises in it and I cannot condone such behaviour in any society. Also in there was @warothe who used to be our favourite intern at Kwani but is now our favourite employee of wherever he currently works. Not too hard considering I don't know any of his colleagues. The poetry came fast and thick and the people were really up for it. Sadly tonight was not to see the birth of the next mutabaruka as the poetry was a mite blah. The microphone was not tuned at an ideal sound levels and the crowd was intent on yelling their best above the poets before the second republic ushers a period of disciplined poetry behaviour in bars. Tony Mochama (on Facebook he calls himself Tony Ontita) gave a reading of something or other but I was too busy being enthralled with tales of the madness that only Vincho can. Stuff Smitta and his random readings I say. Only a few poets come to mind at all. Mercy because well, she is gorgeous; I can’t recall her content but that lass has bootay! And there was this guy who read out a poem in anger at this car driver who splashed him with water the other day. It was a stunning poem this one. May you have diarrhoea and may you hands be too small and may the toilet paper not be enough in the loo... you get the drift I hope. The "saviour" for the day was Number 8 who came and did he usual “Jesus in awesome” poem. I am not sure what the poem was all about but I am pretty sure that the underlying message was "Jesus is Awesome." And off course he won the 5K; how can you win against a guy saying that "Jesus is Awesome" in Kenya. There were two other winners thank you very much NIC Bank for the 10K worth of prizes. And then came the second part of the evening many people were looking forward to; the Mchongoano. “Mwangi and Sons” which is the militant arm of the J Bonyo Foundation came into play and people went on to unleash all manner of mchongoanos on each other for the next half hour. It was fun! I took part and gave my usual "Nyi ni waholy mpaka nyi huona tu maporno tu za gospel." It is pretty funny but in this game you need more that one funny one and eventually I was forced to cheat. I logged onto to twitter which recently had mchongoano as a twitter trend (read more about twitter trends here) but I still was unable to fight these dudes who had clearly done their homework. How am I supposed to compete with "wewe unapenda kumasturbate na sabuni mpaka we huitwa omo-sexual?" Next BSOM is sponsored by the Boston Media Group. Whoever or whatever that is. P.S. Wondering why I titled this piece with “Waaagwaan!!!!” Well when do I get to use that word in a sentence? There’s your answer. P.P.S In other news, Infoken Solutions is hard working on Sally Kahiu's prize of a website and you can see some semblance of the new site here. >> Similar links :: Anto Neosoul rocks Kwani Open Mic :: Wamathai.com turns one year old :: Daniel Pearl Day at Paa ya paa :: Its Kwani Open Mic (but not like you know it) :: Project Heshima rocks like whoa! :: Ngugi Wa Thiongo, an Open Myk and reggae night :: Mathrees at the British Council :: Hip Hop Misconceptions at the British Council :: Words and pictures at the BC (Things we do for lust)
