True love EA turns 5

Last Thursday was a special day. This was the day that our good friends from True Love had designated as their five years as a Kenyan East African publication. They were hosting their event at the Cin Cin at the Fairmont Norfolk. Across the road there were also those people of PEN Kenya hosting their poetry night at the Wasanii restaurant. Well if you know me at all you know that I tried to attend both. Here we go then...

I started with the True Love gig for a reason and that is that I have a thing for the whole five year magazine. For one five years ago (time flies I tell you) I was part of a team of innovative bright and hard working young Kenyans who were trying to start a magazine that would change the publishing industry as we knew it. Dubbed "Miro" the magazine just saw the debut edition and then the team scattered to four winds. It was a very painful experience but I was left the better for it even if I would never have admitted so at the time. That experience opened mine eyes to the media world and I started this blog two years later and I am still at it.

I have mentioned in this space that I have mad respect for that True Love magazine even though I did not hesitate poking holes at their cover policy. They tend to make over the women on their covers so you can barely notice them should you meet them buying stuff at Beauty Options or the like. They also were onto a something when they had hired Wayua Muli as the editor there last year and the publication had gone from strength to strength.

I checked into the Cin Cin and met several people who I have seen over the last few years. It turns out that many of the ladies I could see before me have been cover ladies of what is now (if you are to believe the hype) East Africa's premier magazine. There was Suzzana Owiyo who is on this months cover. And a host of other women like Janet Kanini Ikua who was with a lovely lady from Naija lady who works for Kiss 100 in Abuja. And this lass was telling about the differences between Nairobi and Abuja and Lagos which was quite brill. And there was Misiko Andere who always looks too hot yawa. I have the True Love magazine which she was on the cover. Also in my possession a clipping of Misiko telling Pauline Odhiambo what she knows about men from The Star (Formerly the Nairobi Star) from several moons back. It’s called being a fan (hopefully not one of those who become stalker types with shrines in the home). Also in the home was one Susana Gachukia (the Singer forko jembe wewe) and Mwanaisha Chidzuga the news anchor from that TV station which has a horrible robot as the continuity announcer.

Away from the fabulous women in the house there were off course the True Love staffers (who are also fabulous BTW) that included Carol Odero in her usual shock of red hair and looking delish. And I was also meeting several EAM staffers like Christine Koech who produces content. If you have heard her on the phone and then physically meet her you might be a bit surprised as she is this slight wisp of a lady. Also in the house was Rehema Kahurananga who does some of the features you see glossing the covers of the True Love. And off course Annabel Onyango who after the MAMA Awards found herself to be an international media personality LOL. And Mary Nduta who was recently spotted hawking some magazines in Nakuru he he...

After the speeches from Wayua and the new GM over at EAM we got to tuck into some delicious cake and the rest of it (those desserts…Waaaa! Tamu sana). After which we (that’s Solo, Kenya's own Koko man and his H) strolled over to the Wasanii only to find that that other event had ended. There are some reports there from Kenyanpoet and Eudiah typed out something so you are covered. An interesting part of this part of the evening was that we ran into singer Abbi with his significant other and a few others. And Solo was informing me that they had discussed and would be doing a collabo with Abbi. Some people can be deluded when they sing in the show bana!

To True Love I wish you all the best and may you see not another five but five hundred years.
