Since I came back from my trip to Zimbabwe many of my friends here in Nairobi have been asking me about the country that they have heard so much about. The perception of a country with spiralling inflation and people going to the market to buy basic goods with millions, billions and trillions of Zimbabwe Dollars prevail.
The people have survived the madness of 2008 that we all think is still there. The currency or rather currencies in use now are the US Dollar and the South African Rand. And they are moving on with their lives.
I too was kind of under this (mistaken and misreported) impression of a Zimbabwe in perpetual meltdown until I went to Downtown Harare – which incidentally they also call their Central Business District (CBD). Their CBD is actually bigger than ours here in Nairobi believe you me with some of the most beautiful buildings you will see anywhere on the continent. Here are images I took of SOME of the buildings from the city with my trusty Samsun S3 camera phone.
