Beautiful buildings of Harare

Since I came back from my trip to Zimbabwe many of my friends here in Nairobi have been asking me about the country that they have heard so much about. The perception of a country with spiralling inflation and people going to the market to buy basic goods with millions, billions and trillions of Zimbabwe Dollars prevail.

The people have survived the madness of 2008 that we all think is still there. The currency or rather currencies in use now are the US Dollar and the South African Rand. And they are moving on with their lives.

I too was kind of under this (mistaken and misreported) impression of a Zimbabwe in perpetual meltdown until I went to Downtown Harare – which incidentally they also call their Central Business District (CBD). Their CBD is actually bigger than ours here in Nairobi believe you me with some of the most beautiful buildings you will see anywhere on the continent. Here are images I took of SOME of the buildings from the city with my trusty Samsun S3 camera phone.

  1. Thanks for the comment Henry. I am happy that you would think that I am Zimbwabwean but sadly I am not. You will note that this blog is called Nairobi Living and not Harare Living.
Now the images were taken with my phone camera when I went to visit Zimbabwe for the first time in 2013. They were taken when I was on a walkabout around town. I don’t know the images that are the tallest; I just posted those that appealed to me.
I didn’t say that Harare has better infrastructure than Nairobi’s. Their CBD is larger than ours. The links that you posted didn’t help show which had a bigger CBD unfortunately.

    1. This blog being called Nairobi Living doesnt follow that the pipo from other places in the world are excluded from using it.
So, make an effort then to prove your claim tha the Harare CBD is larger then Nairobi’s. The few Harare buildings u have posted above…it is not like Nairobi doesnt have such fine buildings as well. Take a tour around the CBD, Westlands,Parklans,Upper Hill, Hurlingham. That all is Nairobi.

Maybe u can say they are are a match…But in the entire eastern and central Africa, hamna jiji kama Nairobi

      1. Well you are correct by saying that Nairobi is the biggest in the East and central regions of Africa. But you’ve got to realise that’s Harare, Zimbabwe is in South Africa region, which is the most developed region in Africa.

      2. Harare is very much developed just like Nairobi ,,i think they are @ same level ,,but in southern Africa ,harare is only under Capetown ,Johannesburg and Durban in terms of developmentEnter your comment here…
